A Good Opportunity. An Honest Conversation.
You may know that OjO helps ophthalmologists and optometrists find jobs and partnership opportunities coast to coast. But what you may not know is how much of our work involves helping doctors think through their career decisions. We serve as a sounding board, offering perspective and guidance as they consider their next steps.
These conversations are an important part of what we do. Finding the right opportunity means looking beyond the superficial details of a job description to understand what matters most to each doctor and what they hope to find in their next role. That’s where our experience, guidance, and perspective can be just as valuable as the introductions we make.
Since 2009, we’ve connected with thousands of doctors at every stage of their professional lives: new grad ODs finishing training, ophthalmology residents and fellows choosing their first practice, and experienced physicians considering a change or wondering whether ownership is right for them.
Compensation and partnership are certainly part of the discussion. But so are the colleagues you hope to work alongside, the mentor you may be looking for, and whether a group shares your philosophy of patient care.
We also explore practice culture, work-life balance, places you’d enjoy living, and what a move might mean for your spouse and children. These are all important considerations when deciding what you want the next chapter of your life to look like.
Every doctor’s career journey is different, and we’ve learned a great deal from helping physicians navigate theirs. Our goal is to help you feel more informed and confident as you consider your next career move. We hope the insights and resources you find here are helpful, and if you’d like to talk through your own goals or questions, we’d welcome the opportunity to get to know you both personally and professionally.
Sometimes You Just Want to Ask, “What Do You Think?”
Doctors often reach out while comparing opportunities. They’ve spoken with practices and have offers in hand, but they’d appreciate an outside perspective—even when those opportunities didn’t come through OjO.
Does this incentive structure make sense? How should I compare these compensation packages? What should I understand about the buy-in terms and partnership path? What questions haven’t I asked? Am I overlooking something?
We talk through the possibilities together, considering the terms of an offer and what everyday life might look like in each practice. Is there a clear need for your skills? Will you have the staff, equipment, and support to do your best work? Are the expectations reasonable? Could you see yourself building a life in that community?
Sometimes the most helpful thing we can offer is another set of thoughtful questions or an explanation of an unfamiliar detail. Other times, an experience another doctor has shared with us can shed light on what you’re weighing right now. Talking it through can also help you understand what’s giving you pause—and what you need to learn before moving forward.
Can a Recruiter Put Your Interests Ahead of a Commission?
It’s a fair question. And it’s worth acknowledging the elephant in the room: recruiters don’t always have the best reputation.
You should be able to explore your options and feel confident that the person advising you is listening carefully, speaking honestly, and offering guidance grounded in experience. You deserve to know that your best interests come first.
At OjO, we want you to feel comfortable asking questions, expressing doubts, and saying, “I don’t think this is for me.”
We’re not pushy. We don’t hound you. We take the time to understand what matters to you and your family, share what we know, and give you room to decide. We invite you to read our testimonials and Google reviews to hear how doctors describe working with us.
Sometimes our advice is straightforward: “You know, I really don’t think this is the right opportunity for you—and here’s why.”
If we see a concern about whether a practice would suit you, we’ll talk about it openly. And if staying where you are makes the most sense, that’s a good outcome too.
Helping you make a good decision matters more than making a placement.
Career moves can be stressful. We know a career move can mean selling a home, moving your family, choosing new schools, and starting over in an unfamiliar community. There’s a great deal riding on the decision. We take that seriously, and we’re glad to share what we’ve learned to help you think it through.
You Don’t Need to Have It All Figured Out
Perhaps you’ve been in practice for years and know exactly what you want. Perhaps you’re choosing your first position. Or perhaps you’re reasonably happy where you are but curious to know what else is out there. Wherever you are in your career, we’d welcome a conversation.
Explore our job center, specialty guides, blogs, and resources. Bring us your questions. Tell us what you’re hoping for, what you’d like to avoid, and what previous experiences have taught you about choosing a practice.
We hope you’ll find people here you feel comfortable turning to—whether you’re ready for a change or just need someone to talk a decision through with. We’d love to get to know you and hear what a good next chapter would look like for you.
Our services are confidential and free for job-seeking ophthalmologists and optometrists.
